Signs of complications or problems will vary from surgery to surgery, but there are some general guidelines to follow. If any of the following signs or symptoms occurs, call your doctor immediately, no matter what time of the day or night. If you cannot get in contact with your surgeon, dial 999 immediately.

- Gradually increasing pain that becomes more severe despite pain medication.
- A red area around the incision with a noticeable line of demarcation, especially if the area of redness is extending. (note: pinkness within a few millimeters of the incision is normal).
- Thick white or yellow discharge (pus) from wound (thin yellow, orange, or pink fluid is normal).
- One side noticeably and increasingly larger and/or firmer than the other side.
- Repeated nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
- Any type of rash.
- Difficulty breathing, chest pains, or swelling of the lips or throat.
- Pain in your calves.
- Fever over 101 degrees. (99′ to 100′ Fahrenheit is normal after surgery).
- Blood-soaked dressings (pink fluid is normal, red is not).
- Inability to urinate.
- Dark blue, purple, gray, or black appearance to skin, especially near incisions.

Some of these symptoms could be due to life-threatening conditions so it is imperative that you seek medial assistance as soon as you can; do not just try to ‘wait it out’ to see if it gets any better. If you are unsure about anything, it is better to be safe than sorry so either get to your local hospital or call for an ambulance.

Having cosmetic surgery is a big step. Help yourself to a fast recovery by following these ten tips for a stress-free recover period.

1. Make arrangements for someone to be on hand to care for you for the first 48 hours after surgery. This is important so that someone can monitor your health and well-being, and they can also help to bring you food and plump up your pillows!

2. Prepare for the boredom - buy or borrow lots of books, magazines and DVDs before surgery for reading whilst you are recovering.

3. Prepare and freeze food well in advance - Before surgery, make plenty of single portions of food that can easily be reheated as full meals. Prepare clear liquids, soft foods (broth, yogurt, jello), bland foods (crackers, toast), protein (fish, chicken, soy), frozen peas or raspberries for cold packs, straws or sipping cups, mouthwash, and Tylenol. Make sure you eat plenty of protein to aid healing and low-sodium foods to reduce swelling.

4. Prepare your rest area with a telephone with a speaker phone near your bed in case of emergency. Make sure that you have the numbers for your surgeon within eacy reach of your bed.

5. Buy supplies of moisturisers, scar-minimizing creams such as Mederma, and petroleum jelly (for the incisions) to aid your recovery. Benadryl and oatmeal soap will also help post-op itching.

6. Prepare loose clothing - it will be easy to get on and off after the operation, and when you are at home, they will be more comfotable than tight fitting clothes.

7. Consider scheduling appointments to have lymphatic drainage massage to help reduce post-op swelling. Consult your surgeon before going ahead with this.

8. Consider buying appliances such as a hand-help shower head and a shower-chair to help bathing whilst you are recovering.

9. Have plenty of water nearby. If you are dehydrated, your recovery time will increase. If you are not a fan of plain water, buy plenty of squash before your surgery.

10. Buy sunblock to protect your skin. You skin will probably be more fragile for a few months after surgery and sunblock can help to protect it. Try and avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

The decision to have cosmetic surgery can be difficult. If you are thinking about cosmetic surgery, you may be asking yourself some hard questions

- Am I being vain?
- Do I have the money? Is this how I really want to spend my money?
- Does plastic surgery going to fit in with my life priorities?
- How will cosmetic surgery affect my life?
- How will I feel if it goes wrong or the results are not what I expected?

It is entirely normal to be asking yourself questions such as these. It is important to answer the questions truthfully and to think about your answers carefully – you need to be comfortable with whatever decision you make.

Below is a series of questions which will help you to think through your decision. It might help you to write the answers out. Remember to be honest with yourself and remember that there is no right or wrong answer. Once you have worked through the questions, you will be able to talk about them with your plastic surgeon or a friend.

- What do I not like about the way I look?
- Why do I not like this feature?
- Does my physical appearance hinder me by stopping me from doing certain activities?
- Do I ever try to hide this feature?
- Why have I decided to have surgery now? Why not in the past, or in the future?
- What am I expecting from the surgery?
- What sort of impact will having surgery have on my life?
- What happens if the results from the surgery are not what I wanted?
- How will my friends and family react to my decision to have surgery? Will they see me in a different light?

The Consultation

Talking your decision through with your cosmetic surgeon is a key part of your decision to have cosmetic surgery or not. It is important to be honest with your surgeon so that the surgeon understands what you are after to ensure you get the best results, and so that you can get the reassurance that the procedure is the correct one for you. Be as prepared for the consultation as you can be. Check the credentials of the surgeon and the surgery first to ensure they are reputable. Take in a list of any questions you may have about the procedure or the surgeon to ensure you get all the information you need.

The consultation may take time. As well as your questions, your surgeon will also need to take your medical history, take photographs of the areas you would like changed and will talk in depth about what you required. Many surgeons will be able to scan in your picture and simulate what sort of effect the surgery will have on you.

After the consultation, you should know how much the surgery will costs as well information on the procedure such as the associated risks. When you have had your consultation, ask yourself the following questions

- Were all my questions answered?
- Am I happy with the financial cost of the operation?
- Do I have confidence in the surgeon?
- Am I ready to go ahead with the surgery?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, take some more time to think about the surgery or visit other cosmetic surgeons before making a decision.

Cosmetic surgery is life changing. By choosing a good surgeon and surgery, you can ensure that this change is for the better. It is important to choose the right surgeon for you. Below is a list of points you should consider before you go through the all important consultation process.

Credentials: Crosscheck their credentials prior to your consultation. They should be accredited by your country’s National Plastic Surgeon Society. Always have your surgeon done by an accredited surgeon, even if it is more expensive than an un-accreditted surgeon otherwise you cannot be sure that the surgeon possesses the required cosmetic surgery skills.
Expertise: Does the surgeon’s area of expertise match with the surgery that you require?
Technology: Is the surgeon knowledgeable about current issues and techniques in his field? Does he have the latest technology at his disposal?
Cost: Does the cost, including aftercare and medication, meet your budget restraints?
Pictures: Ask the surgeon for several pictures of previous patients with pre- and post-surgery pictures. Would you be happy with his work?
Risks: Is the surgeon forthcoming about the risks and complications? He must not dismiss the risks of surgery and should be willing to discuss at length any complications associated with the operation.
Post-op care: Will your surgeon be actively involved in post-operative care? Is there a good policy for follow-up care?
Gimmicks: Shun away from any sales gimmicks or unrealistic bargains. Do not be forced into surgery by friends if they get a discount for surgery.
Rapport: Do you have a good rapport with the surgeon? To get the best results, the surgeon must fully understand your motivations, reasons and expectations of the surgery. If you are not happy, or you feel you are not ‘clicking’ with the surgeon, look for another surgeon.

Good results depend on the expertise of the surgeon and how well he has understood your needs. Choose a surgery with discretion and you should end up with great results!
