Getting the most from your Eyelid Surgery

A cosmetic surgeon has warned that patients looking to have eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) should be prepared to use tape or a paperclip to show your cosmetic surgeon exactly how high they would like the crease on the eyelid.

Dr. Peterson, Chief Plastic Surgeon at Athena Clinic, made the comments after discovering that many Asian patients were having eyelid surgery and ending up with the eyelid crease too high. The problem comes because the average Asian eyelid is smaller than the average Caucasian eyelid – Asian eyelids are, on average, 7.49mm whereas Caucasian eyelids are 10mm.

Much of the plastic surgeon training is done in the US and on Caucasians therefore most calculations that cosmetic surgeons do are based on ‘Western’ creases. Even if an Asian patient wishes to have more Westernised eyes, it is still not a good idea to base measurements on Caucasian eyelid measurements because the end result will normally have the patient having a permanent surprised look on their face.

So, it is recommended that before eyelid surgery, patients ensure that their cosmetic surgeon has a good idea of exactly what the patient is after to ensure the best possible results after cosmetic surgery. Although Dr. Peterson’s comments are made in relation to Asian eyelid surgery, the same rings true for all patients and all surgeries – the better your cosmetic surgery understands your aims for the surgery, the more likely you are to get the results you are after.

Asian Children Turn to Cosmetic Surgery

New research has shown that some Asian children feel under pressure to look more like their Western counterparts and are turning to cosmetic surgery to achieve their desired look.

There has always been a lot of debate surrounding what the minimum age for elective plastic surgery should be – particularly over parents who give their teenage children permission to have cosmetic surgery, and these latest findings are likely to promote a lot more debate on the industry.

The Hastings Center Report has found that more Asian children than ever are looking to plastic surgery to make them look more Western and play up to the Hollywood ideal. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures – with many asking for more almond shaped eyes – along with liposuction and breast enhancements. Statistics have also revealed that Asian children are more likely to resort to plastic surgery than their Western counterparts.

Manbag surgery surges

Cosmetic surgery amongst British men seems more popular than ever with eye lifts for men, colloquially known as ‘manbags’, doing particularly well. Record numbers of men are following George Clooney’s example and going under the knife to rid themselves of the tired, baggy and saggy skin around their eyes. Anecdotal evidence shows that these procedures have more than quadrupled in just two years.

Some men are considering cosmetic surgery to help their job prospects – some businessmen feel that they need a smart, youthful look to help give them the edge in both holding onto their current job, looking for promotions, or looking for a new job altogether.

The cosmetic surgery is attractive because it can take as little as an hour to complete, and if the surgery is done under a local anaesthetic, the patient may not need an overnight stay in hospital.

Procedure: Corrects drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags underneath the eyes by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle.

Length: 1 to 3 hours.

Anesthesia: Normally local with sedation or general.

In/Outpatient: Normally outpatient.

Side Effects: Temporary discomfort, tightness of lids, swelling, bruising. Temporary dryness, burning, itching of eyes. Excessive tearing, sensitivity to light for first few weeks.

Risks: Temporary blurred or double vision, infection, bleeding. Swelling at the corners of the eyelids. Dry eyes. Formation of whiteheads. Slight asymmetry in healing or scarring. Difficulty in closing eyes completely (rarely permanent). Pulling down of the lower lids (may require further surgery), blindness (very rare).

Recovery:

2 to 3 days: Reading
7 to 10 days: Back to work
2 weeks +: Contact lenses
3 weeks: Alcohol
3 weeks +: Bruising and swelling gone

Duration of Results: Several years although sometimes permanent.
