The Microneedle Therapy System – also known as the Dermaroller – involves the face being numbed with an anaesthetic before it is massaged with a needle studded roller. This process is said to help the patient look younger by helping to improve collagen production in the skin and enhance local blood flow. This leaves the skin with a healthy glow and a more youthful looking appearance.

The major problem with the device is that it is not always sterilised properly between treatments. As the skin is pierced by the needles, if the roller has not been sterilised correctly there is a risk of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis.

Doctors have warned that anyone looking to have the Dermaroller treatment should ensure that they use a reputable salon where there are high standards of hygiene to ensure nothing nasty is picked up from the treatment. Most high end spas will change the roller for each client to ensure there is no chance of cross-contamination.

The thinning of the lips is a common problem for men as they age as collagen production decreases over time. To counter this problem men are looking for lip fillers to help their lips remain plump and full.

According to the Harley Medical Group, male lip enhancement procedures are up 17 percent year-on-year. The procedure is becoming so popular that it is now commonly known as ‘The Cameron’ after the UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron who suffers from a thin upper lip.

To achieve a plumper looking lip, fillers are injected in a series of small injections on either side of the lips. The whole procedure takes around half an hour to perform and gives immediate results. The fillers must be topped up every few months as their effects diminishes over time.

According to ABCNews, Cindy Jackson has hit the headlines by setting the world record for plastic surgery procedures – Jackson has now had 52 procedures, a world record for the most procedures even undergone by a single person.

“I didn’t set out to break, to set a world record, it was never my ambition, it’s just that I had so much done,” Jackson commented.

Jackson is said to have spent around $100,000 on her beauty procedures which have included 14 full operations.

Asked why she had, replied: “For me, it was just to look better.”

“For me, the best result is one that looks natural. I wouldn’t ever want anyone to stop and stare at me and say ‘that woman’s had a lot of surgery.’ I would never want to look like I’d had anything done.

When asked about why she liked cosmetic surgery, Jackson explained: “One guy said when I was 14, ‘You know Cindy, when you smile, from the side your nose and chin almost meet.’ It was like being in the wrong body and wrong face and I felt that very much and wanted to change it.”

When Jackson’s father died, the money he had left her allowed her to start having cosmetic procedures.

The most recent procedure Jackson has had is to have her hands injected with a collagen-stimulator to help her hanrd look younger.

The reasons for the surge in cosmetic surgery numbers is two-fold: During the menopause, the skin finds it harder to retain moisture thanks to a drop in oestrogen in the body. The amount of collagen and elastin produced by the skin – both elements which help the skin look plump and fresh – decreases with age. This leads to drier skin and a slightly saggier complexion and many post-menopausal women sometimes also find they suffer from thread veins, discoloured skin and acne. Combined with thinning hair and weight gain, some women are turning to cosmetic surgery in a bid to feel better and turn back the clock.

With many older women such as Jane Fonda and Raquel Welch admitting to having had plastic surgery in the past, and with older celebrities looking fantastic well past menopause, post-menopausal women are realising that they can still look fabulous at any age.

Most of the procedures are non-invasive – dermal fillers, Botox, skin peels and laser treatments are the most popular.

Botox can help with unwanted wrinkles. Dermal fillers help to plump the skin out making it look younger and fresher whilst also helping with unwanted wrinkles. Skin peels will help improve the look and feel of the skin. Laser treatments help to get rid of thread veins and remove unwanted hair.

Most women are probably familiar with breast and cleavage enhancers such as push-up and padded bras, and ‘chicken fillets’. For those used to these little aids, the TLC Breast Enhancement may be a good treatment to try. TLC uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to help firm the breasts or increase their size.

No needles or incisions are made and as the treatment lasts just 30 minutes, it can be done during a lunch break. Best of all, there are no tell-tale signs that you have had the treatment so no-one should notice where you have been.

The treatment is said to mimic natural processes in the body. During puberty, oestrogens are produced by a woman’s body. The size, shape and fullness of the breasts depend on the amount of tissue the hormone formed. Then, if a woman gets pregnant, during pregnancy the body will again starts creating these hormones, causing the breasts to enlarge. The micro-beam from the treatment laser encourages oestrogen production, thereby mimicing the natural growth in puberty and pregnancy.

During a treatment session, a handpiece is moved over the breasts, emitting a micro-beam. This activates nerves within the breasts increasing blood pressure in the capillaries, promoting microcirculation, thickening connective tissue and encouraging the breast cells to enlarge. The collagen fibres should also begin to tighten meaning the breast area should start to firm up.

There will be no discernable different immediately after treatment as patients will required two treatments for around three months before a difference is seen. Patients may find that the area is slightly tingly thanks to the reactivation of the nerves, however there should be no other significant side effects.

Not everyone is suitable for the TLC IPL treatment. Women looking to increase their bust size by more than two cups will be disappointed with the results. Anyone with E cups or above will also probably not benefit from this treatment.

The ideal patient is someone who has an A to C cup and who is looking to increase their bust size by one or two cup sizes and/or tone their breast area up. Expect to pay around £1,500 for six sessions.

One word of caution is that although it is widely believed that IPL can improve the look and tone of the skin, there are no studies as yet to show that IPL can increase the bust size by any significant amount.

However a new device – the D-Actor – hopes to help women who suffer from the orange-peel skin associated with cellulite.

The D-Actor device uses acoustic wave therapy (AWT) to help lessen cellulite. AWT is not a new technique – it has been around for decades helping kidney stones disintegrate and to help ease joint pain. Doctors using the machine found that when treating the joints of athletes, the skin around where the machine was being used looked better and it wasn’t long before the beauty industry picked up on the unexpected side-effect of the machine.

AWT works by blasting compressed air onto the skin. This creates rapid pulsations and sends pressure waves through to the cellulite under the skin. The shockwaves are then said to ‘shatter and destroy’ the cellulite-causing connective fibres, releasing clogged fat, water and toxins. The blood flow to the area is increased and collagen production is stimulated. This in turn leads to much smoother looking skin.

The D-Actor can be used on the areas of the body most prone to cellulite including the thighs, bottom, stomach and upper arms.

The D-Actor will not help you lose weight and should only be used if you want to lose some of your cellulite and improve the appearance of your skin. The ideal candidate for D-Actor sessions is someone who has good muscle tone but is having difficulty getting rid of cellulite.

Six sessions using the D-Actor are recommended, normally with one or two sessions scheduled per week.

Madonna is rumoured to be so enamoured with the procedure that she has spent £50,000 on a machine so she can use it at home.

Unfortunately, there is no definitive method for measuring how bad cellulite is and how much treatments such as the D-Actor help. There are also no long-term studies that show whether this treatment actually does work or not.

Foot fillers are not a new phenomenon and many catwalk models are rumoured to have had the procedure done. Foot fillers can also help medical complaints such as Morton’s Neuroma where the nerves running between the third and fourth toes and in the ball of the foot become inflamed.

A foot filler treatment takes around half an hour and is an out-patient procedure only. Dermal fillers are injected into the balls of the feet to help trigger the synthesis of collagen. This helps to ‘plump up’ the ball of the foot and hopefully make it less painful to wear high heels.

The results are not immediate and it may take a couple of weeks before the true effects are seen. There may be minor side effects after the filler has been injected into the foot such as swelling and tenderness, therefore it is best to try and ensure you will be off your feet for 2 or 3 days after the procedure. The results will last around six to nine months before a top-up will be required.

The dermaroller’s inventor, cosmetic surgeon Dr Michael Prager, has now extended his concept for use on the rest of the body. Whilst the dermaroller for the face uses pins which are between 0.5mm and 1.55mm long, his new dermaroller uses pins which are 3mm long. This means that the roller can be used on other areas of the body which suffer from sagging or stretch marks.

Firstly a local anaesthetic is applied to the area to be treated. The dermaroller is then rolled across the skin. The roller pieces the tiny blood vessels in the top layer of the skin – in a centimetre square, there will be around 250 tiny puncture marks. The bleeding releases platelets which helps to repair and regenerate the connective tissues and stimulates the production of collagen – the same sort of theory that is behind facial peels and laser skin procedures.

After the dermaroller has been applied to the area, topical treatments are used to help increase the positive effects. Typically, Transderm is used. Transderm is a needle-free injection system which delivers hyaluronic acid and pentapeptides into the skin. A topical cream is then applied to help stimulate collagen production further. This cream will need to be applied to the area daily for a couple of weeks after treatment.

The dermaroller system is an out-patient procedure and generally will not require an overnight stay. There will be bruising and tenderness around the treated area however painkillers will probably not be necessary.

Although the dermaroller procedure has many fans around the world, some cosmetic surgeons are not so sure about the technique as there are no clinical trials that have proved the efficacy of the treatment. There is also no guarantee that the procedure will produce the anticipated results.

However at around £500, the dermaroller is a lot cheaper than a tummy tuck and thanks to this price tag, the body Dermaroller is sure to be a popular procedure.

So what better cosmetic procedure to contemplate than the handlift? The handlift should leave your hands looking plumper and smoother and this gives the illusion of the hands of a much younger woman, thus the handlift will help you disguise your true age.

Previously, rejuvenating the hands has tended to involve the transplant of fat to the hands to give them the firmer, more plumped up look. However this can sometimes lead to a slightly fake, unnatural look to the hands – and therefore give way the fact that you have had cosmetic surgery.

The latest handlift procedure involves Restylane, a type of dermal filler most commonly known for being used on the face. The Restylane Vital ‘hand lift’ takes around 20 minutes to complete and involves having local anaesthetic injected before tiny drops of hyaluronic acid are injected into the hands. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the skin and helps with the suppleness of the skin. The Restylane injections are said to cause water to bind to the connective tissue in the hands more readily, thus giving a natural plumping action, leaving the skin on the hands more elastic and firm.

The handlift is not permanent however it is claimed to take 10 years off the look of the hands. Hyaluronic acid breaks down over time so repeat injections will be required every year or so.

However some research has shown that even when the hyaluronic acid has fully broken down, the skin on the hands still remains more elastic than it otherwise would have been. This is thought to be because the hyaluronic acid helps improve collagen production which in turn helps the look and feel of the skin.

The AcneApp uses 550 nanometer red light and 420 nanometer blue light to help kill bacteria on the skin and promote collagen growth. At just $1.99, the AcneApp can be downloaded to either the iPhone or iPod Touch.

But does this cosmetic app actually work? Some dermatologists have said that they do not believe that the AcneApp really does work, stating that there are plenty of trials which have shown that blue and red light therapy is not particularly effective in acne treatment.

In fact, the UV rays from the application could even be harmful to the skin.
