The ‘McDonalidsation’ of Cosmetic Surgery

A New Zealand cosmetic surgery is offering doctors a two-day training course in Manchester, England, with the promise of a franchise for those who pass the course, according to British newspaper the Independent. This ‘McDonaldisation’ of cosmetic surgery has led to an increase in cosmetic surgery treatments being carried out by unqualified or insufficiently qualified people.

Pete Burns sues over botched cosmetic surgery

Former pop star Pete Burns has sued his cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Maurizio Viel, over a ‘botched’ lip operation. Burns turned to the surgeon to have a lip implant removed however he alleges that Dr. Viel, instead of removing the implant, injected his lips with Evolution and Outline fillers causing swelling, blisters, discharge and lumps.

More US teens go under the knife

Plastic surgery is on the increase in American teens according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In 2006, nearly 94,000 teenagers aged 19 or under underwent some form of cosmetic surgery – a figure that does not include minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox and chemical peels. In 1996, just 11,500 under 18s went under the knife; In 2002, this figure had grown to nearly 81,000.

LA Specialists give veterans free cosmetic surgery

A new foundation has been founded to provide free cosmetic surgery to wounded war veterans and provide them with the same kind of “rock star” treatment that is normally afforded to A-list celebrities.

Lipodissolve Warnings

Lipodissolve, sometimes know as medical lipolysism is a fat-busting injection that is described as a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction. Tiny shots are administered to problem areas and the fat deposits ‘melt away’. However, many doctors are alaramed that the practice has spread so far so quickly and have warned that some of the concoctions used are not approved by American’s Food and Drug Administration. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery warned last month that the lipodissolve shots were scientifically unproven.

According to experts, men are becoming more self conscious and this has led to a huge increase in demand for male breast reduction operations in the past year. According to BMI Healthcare, the largest private hospital group in the UK, there has been a surge in men looking to have liposuction and breast reduction surgery to get rid of their ‘moobs’ (man boobs). It’s not just the men either – in the past 6 months they have seen a 43% increase in women wanting breast reduction surgery.
