For people looking to rid their face of wrinkles but who aren’t prepared to have foreign substances such as Botox or fillers injected, the ‘vampire facelift’ could be the answer.

The vampire facelift procedure – whose proper name is platelet rich plasma or PRP for short – involves injecting the patient’s own blood back into them

First, blood is removed from the patient – normally from the arm. This blood is put into a special machine that separates the platelets out. Platelets are a natural source of growth factors and they help to form blood clots in the case of wounds such as cuts or bruises. They are also thought to help the skin repair itself.

There is some science behind the PRP treatment. When rats have been injected with platelets, scientists have found that their skin habours increased numbers of collage fibres and their skin quality was deemed to have improved. Platelet transfusions have also been long-used in other areas of medicine for example in patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplants and radiation treatment.

Although the injected platelets come from the patient’s own body there is still the risk of side effects. Although side effects are rare, some people may find that platelet injections can cause itching, rashes or a temperature.

There are several downsides to the PRP treatment for reducing the look of wrinkles. The first is that because it is a relatively new procedure, it doesn’t work for everyone. At present around 60 percent of patients will see an improvement. However cosmetic experts are currently looking at whether changing the concentration of the platelets affects the efficacy of the treatment. Given that it costs over £1,000 for a set of injections some may deem it too high a price for a treatment where there is only a 60 percent chance of the treatment having the desired results.

Lipo-filling could the answer. Lipo-filling involves removing fat from one area of the body via liposuction, purifying the fat, and then injecting it into areas that require filling.

A big positive for lipo-filling is that it combines two procedures in one – helping to reduce the size of problem areas whilst increasing breast size. By using fat that has been taken from the patient’s own body, it also means no immunosuppresive drugs need to be taken.

However the procedure isn’t perfect. Unfortunately, the fat is reabsorbed by the body over the course of a year so the filler would have to be topped up on a regular basis.

Scientists are currently looking at ways to slow down the fat reapsorbtion process. One of the most promising solutions is by using the stem cells in the fat. By isolating and purifying these fat stem cells and then adding them into the fat graft, there is an increase in the blood vessel growth around the site and this helps keep the graft alive, reducing reapsorbtion.

1980s star Gary Numan has revealed the cosmetic surgery procedures he has had done.

Talking to the Daily Mail he said he had tiny scars left over from a facelift.

“They do a cut down here and it goes right under your ear,” he told them. “Once they’ve cut you they move the muscles back and reattach them.

“It’s amazing. I was getting a bit saggy and jowly – I cam again, come to think of it. I’ll have to have it redone.

“I wouldn’t say I’m vain. I’m just in a job where the way you look is important. Well, at least the facelift wasn’t vanity, but the hair was.”

The hair Numan is talking about is the five hair transplant procedures he has endured. “It stung like a b****** back then, but it’s better now,” Numan explained. “I don’t know what kind Wayne Rooney had but with his money he could have the best hair in the world.”

And it isn’t just Gary who has gone under the knife – Numan’s wife Gemma has also had plastic surgery, most recently a facelift.

“She’s the most amazing woman,” Numan said. “She’s lovely, but she doesn’t believe it. She’s had her lips done and her ears pinned back. She’s had her boobs small and big. She’s just had a facelift, she’s still got her stitches in. It never ends!

“She’s got body dysmorphia so the tiniest lack of symmetry is a massive carbuncle on her face to her. But she is brilliant and everything got better from the moment I met her.”

Toe-shortening Cosmetic Surgery

Would you consider having cosmetic surgery to make your toes look better in shoes? An increasing number of people are having toe shortening surgery in order to increase the aesthetic appeal of their feet.

Although toe shortening surgery is performed to help people whose toes rub together uncomfortably or who find it difficult to find shoes that fit, many people are now going under the knife to make their feet look prettier.

Toe shortening surgery takes around 15 minutes per toe to perform. It is most commonly performed on the 2nd and 3rd toes, although any toe can be operated on.

Local anaesthetic is usually used and the surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure. A portion of the toe’s small joint is removed and pins or screws are inserted into the foot. Depending on how much bone was removed, some skin on the toe may also need to be removed.

After surgery, the patient will be required to walk with crutches for a week. Special surgical shoes may also need to be worn. After two weeks, any sutures will be removed. During this two week period, it is usually advised to apply ice packs to the feet to help reduce swelling.

After around one and a half months the pins are removed, although screws will remain in the foot.

It will take up to six months for the foot to heal fully. There may be some loss of toe flexibility however it should not affect the patient’s ability to walk or play sports. Driving is normally not permitted until after the pins have been removed from the feet.

TV presenter Holly Willoughby has admitted that she would consider anti-aging treatments in the future.

Mum-of-two Willoughby, 31, told Look magazine, “Never say never! One day, I imagine. I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t.

“If you want to go and have a little something done to make yourself feel better, good for you. But there’s a limit. These things get addictive.”

Despite not having had cosmetic surgery yet, Willoughby has admitted that she has noticed some signs of aging.

“I definitely notice it,” she said. “After a night on white wine I wake up looking 10 years older.

“I swear 100 per cent by agave tequila. Agave’s a natural antihistamine so you don’t get that bloating or redness the next day and you don’t feel hungover.”

The Importance of Exercise to Ensuring Lasting Liposuction Benefits

One of the risks associated with liposuction is the quick post-surgery accumulation of fat, diminishing the effects of the often painful procedures which people undergo to get rid of excess fat. It seems, however, that scientists may have found a rather simple and yet efficient way to address this particular problem – through regular exercise. So, after coming home from their London liposuction clinic, and once they have recovered from the procedure, patients should consider pulling their running shoes on and getting some exercise to maintain the effects of the treatment.

A recent article in the health section of the NY Times reports the results of a study conducted by researchers at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, indicating that to facilitate lasting benefits from liposuction, people need to exercise or they otherwise risk regaining the fat lost during the surgery. Although in principle it seems somewhat obvious that exercise in general helps to keep the fat away, people tend to think that a visit to a London liposuction clinic will solve their excess fat problems for good.

The study examined 36 healthy women, aged from 20 to 35, who were of normal weight, but volunteered to have a couple of pounds of abdominal flab removed by means of liposuction. The study results showed that within the first four months after the surgery, half of the women had not only regained fat, but increased their stores of visceral fat, that is, the fatty tissue which accumulates around internal organs and is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Those women had decreased their everyday activity levels, which according to the researchers had contributed to the gain of the unhealthy visceral fat.

The other half of the women, however, did not experience this adverse post-liposuction effect. Those women had been assigned an exercise program and worked out three times a week for four months following the surgery. In addition to regaining very little fat, if any, those women added no new visceral fat. The study’s authors subsequently concluded that while liposuction could potentially “trigger a compensatory increase of visceral fat”, this undesirable effect could effectively be “counteracted by physical activity”.

Besides hinting at the potential correlation between liposuction and the increased accumulation of visceral fat, the study addresses yet another important issue – people who have undergone a liposuction procedure rarely take up exercise. Surgical fat removal procedures are often viewed as a magic solution and a lot of people think that the way to good looks ends as soon as they leave their London liposuction clinic after the surgery. Yet, this is not necessarily the case, with the fat often returning albeit not necessarily in the same areas from which it was surgically removed. Although exercise does not always solve the problem of fat in specific areas (which is often the reason for having liposuction in the first place), it will help maintain the procedure’s results and by this means is likely to reduce the need for any subsequent fat removal procedures.

Of course, any post-surgery physical activity should be exercised with caution, depending on the procedure and the time needed for recovery. What the Sao Paulo study researchers assigned to the trial subjects was walking or jogging on a treadmill and some light weight training. In any case, patients will benefit from talking to a consultant at their London liposuction clinic, who will be able to recommend the most appropriate exercise routine with regards to their situation and physical condition.

While going to a London liposuction clinic is likely to solve the problem of excess fat in areas which do not respond easily to either exercise or diet, patients should remember that a scalpel is not a magic wand. Long-lasting liposuction results therefore depend not only on the skill of the surgeon but also on the efforts and ability of the patient to properly look after his or her own body, with exercise being one of the most effective ways to keep the fat at bay.

What time of year should you have your cosmetic surgery?

Is there an optimum time of year for patients to have their cosmetic surgery operations? Many patients opt to have plastic surgery when they know they have a period of holiday booked, for example over the Christmas period, so that they know they have time to recover before they go back to work, but are there times during the year when it is better for the body to undergo surgery?

Winter Cosmetic Surgery
Any type of cosmetic surgery is good to have done during the winter months. The cooler weather means that patients can wear extra layers and bulkier clothes to disguise any swelling or bruising. Scarves and turtleneck tops can help to hide the telltale signs of facial cosmetic surgery such as facelifts; Swelling from body cosmetic surgery such as breast implants, liposuction or a tummy tuck can be hidden by large, warm jumpers and coats.

Autumn Cosmetic Surgery
Similar to spring, autumn is a great time to have cosmetic surgery. Recovery from surgery during these months will probably be over by the time the holiday season starts meaning you can look your best.

Autumn also tends to be cooler than summer so jumpers and scarves can be worn to help hide post-operative swelling and bruising. Sunlight is not as strong during these months as it is during the summertime so again, it is better for recovery.

Tips For Choosing a Breast Augmentation Surgeon

If you’re considering breast enhancement surgery, your first step is to identify a surgeon to consult with who will be able to give you open, honest, well-educated advice and who will be able to answer all of your lingering questions. After all, you’re about to make a life-changing (not to mention, financially burdening) decision and so you’ll certainly want it to be a well-informed one.

It’s simply not enough to Google-search plastic surgeons in your area and pick the least expensive or most conveniently located one, you’re going to want to do your homework in order to avoid any regrets in the future.

Get Advice

The first thing that you’re going to want to do is to seek a few personal references. More than likely, if you’re considering implants, you or someone you know has a friend or two who has had the procedure. Contact them to find out who they used, what they paid for the procedure and if they were happy with both the results and with the doctor’s bed-side-manner.

Once you’ve identified a couple of surgeons with glowing recommendations, schedule your consults. Note that “consults” is plural, you’ll want to schedule to meet with more than just one.

The Consultation

In preparation for your first consult appointment, gather some photos that adequately represent the look that you are going for and which you will bring with you to your appointment. When you do this, be sure to select images that accurately portrait your body type and have them printed out so that you can easily share them with the doctor (don’t try to show the doctor a digital photo on your phone or iPad).

The surgeon will certainly have photos for you to look at while you are in the office and of course you’ll want to review several of his/her before-and-after images but it’s better to also have some images that you, yourself have selected as your ideal results.

Next, put together a list of questions that you’ll want to ask during your appointment. The FDA recommends a series of questions in 3 separate categories: questions that relate to the surgeon’s experience, questions about the operation itself and questions about the expected results.

You can review those questions in the FDA’s online pamphlet entitled, Questions to Ask Before Having Breast Implant Surgery. In addition to the FDA recommended questions, you’re going to have a few of your own personal questions or concerns that you’ll want to address and discuss. Write them down and bring them with you.

At your consult, be sure to find out what your options are if you are dissatisfied with the cosmetic outcome of the implants and what alternate procedures or products are available if you choose not to have breast implants (because you may decide that the procedure is not right for you after you’ve been educated).

Listen to What the Doctor Recommends

Lastly and most importantly, be sure to ask the surgeon to be very clear about what his/her recommendations are for you. Listen carefully and objectively to their thoughts on shape, size, surface texturing, incision site, and placement site for you despite the goals that you had in mind, the photos that you may have already shared with them or results that you’ve already discussed.

The doctor may have a completely different recommendation for your body type and personal situation. They are the expert and you’ll want to select a surgeon who is not afraid to tell you that what you are asking for may not be right for you.

Once you’ve met with at least two experienced, qualified surgeons, you’ll be in a position to first, make your decision as to whether or not breast augmentation is right for you and secondly, if it is right for you, you’ll be able to determine which doctor is the best fit for you!
