The course is being offered with the aim of increasing standards in the cosmetic surgery industry.

The course offered is an MSc in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Practice and is offered from the University’s Postgraduate Medical Institute in Chelmsford, Essex and the first students will start the course in September 2012.

At present, all UK-qualified plastic surgeons are trained by the Royal College of Surgeons however their training is not cosmetic surgery-specific. It is hoped that the new degree will help give surgeons experience in the plastic surgery arena and therefore help improve the quality of surgery that patients receive.

There are several different cosmetic procedures which can be done on the feet and are usually done to help patients cope with the pain of high heeled shoes.

One of the most popular cosmetic procedures for the feet is having dermal fillers injected into either the toe pads, heels or balls of the feet. The dermal filler injections take around 20 minutes to administer and help to cushion the feet to reduce the burning sensation that can occur when wearing high heels. The results can last up to 6 months before a top up injection is required.

The foot fillers are becoming popular because with towering stilettos being the in-thing, women are finding that many shoes hurt their feet. Costing around £320, it is less than the price of a pair of designer shoes therefore the procedure is easily accessible to many.

Figures released by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) have shown that the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for these young women are double eyelid surgery to reduce the excess skin around the upper eyelid and make the eyes look bigger, lipoplasty, and rhinoplasty (nose jobs).

Korea is also a popular place for medical tourism with patients regularly travelling to the country for plastic surgery from places such as China, Japan, the Middle East and Africa.

According to the latest figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), chin implants – a.k.a. ‘chinplants’ – are the fastest growing cosmetic surgery trend in the US. Chinplants are becoming so popular that their numbers grew by more than breast augmentation, liposuction and Botox combined.

There were over 20,000 chin surgeries carried out in America last year – most of which were either mentoplasties, where the chin size is decreased, and maxillofacial corrective surgery, where the jaw position is altered.

Chin implant surgery takes up to around four hours to complete. Most patients will be able to have their cosmetic surgery under local anaesthetic. Once the anaesthetic has been given, a silicone implant will be placed into the jaw to give it a more defined look. Although the area will remain sore and swollen for up to a fortnight, most patients will be allowed home the same day.

Many men fear going bald and when their hairline does start to recede, there is litte choice over what to do: Comb-overs often look false, hair transplants are very expensive, there is little evidence to show how effective most lotions and potions are, and spray-on concealers wash off and are not a permanent solution.

However a new, slightly unusual procedure, is starting to gain popularity in part thanks to the cost and in part because it is permanent – a hair tattoo that costs around £2,000.

The procedure involves using pigment on the scalp to give the appearance of short, cropped hair. Different shades of pigment are used to help mimic the natural variation in size, shape and density of normal hair to give a more natural look.

The Micro Hair Technique (MHT) was developed by Ian Watson who came up with the idea after developing alopecia (where hair is lost from the head and/or body) and he asked a friend to draw dots on his head to give him the look of having cropped hair. Although the ink was removed when he had a shower, he decided to take his idea a step further and make it into a more permanent fixture.

It is claimed that very little ongoing maintenance is required therefore after the initial outlay, there should be little or no costs involved.

The MHT hair loss treatment is suitable for a wide range of baldness including a receding hairline, balding of the crown, and complete hair loss. It can also be used to help camouflage scars on the head for example scars left from hair transplant procedures.

Scientists have said that they have already developed drugs that blocks the protein that stops the hair from growing meaning that products to help with baldness could be on the market within just five years. The lotions could help stop ay more hair loss and may possibly even be able to stimulate hair growth again.

At the moment, bald men do not have a lot of options open to them if they want a full head of hair – the only real options are comb-over, toupee or wig, or a hair transplant. The last option is expensive, painful and not always fully successful.

Now, scientists have discovered that a protein called PDG2 could be responsible for hair loss. Looking at the scalps of balding men, scientists discovered that levels of PDG2 were three times higher in areas where hair was thinning than in other areas. They tested the protein on lab mice and found that the compound stunted their hair growth. It is currently thought that PGD2 prevents the cells from maturing properly. Scientists are now looking at hair loss treatments in the form of topical lotions and pills to help stop hair loss, with the hope that some hair may even regrow.

Dr Cotsarelis, one of the scientists working on the research, has also revealed that he hopes that the research will have wider implications beyond male pattern baldness as the hair loss process shares some chemistry with skin cancer and wound healing.

Cate Blanchett is the latest Hollywood actress to announce that she will not be heading under the surgeon’s knife for any cosmetic surgery.

The 42 year old beauty has said her main reason for avoiding plastic is that she is frightened of the long-term effects.

“There’s been a decade or probably more of people doing interventions on their faces and their bodies, and now people are seeing that long term, it’s not so great,’ she told Fashionetc.com.

“I’m not sitting on a soapbox telling women what they should and shouldn’t do,’ she added. ‘I just know what works for me. I’d just be too frightened about what it means long-term.

“Looking at women in their 20s doing this stuff, in the end all you see is the work. It doesn’t fill me with admiration; it fills me with pity.”

To help her staying looking youthful, Blanchett looks to the past – although she readily admits that not all ancient beauty practices are a good idea. She always swears by a glass of lemon juice in the morning.

“We’re always looking for the new thing,” she says. “I’m very old fashioned … We do so much to ourselves, I don’t know whether boredom or what. It’s like, do less! Read a book, go for a walk!

“It [lemon juice] keeps your systems going. Like the people who get into colonic therapy; there’s a logic to that. The French have been doing it for years – the Egyptians did it.

“There are certain things in ancient practices that are not worth adhering to.”
